Historical Note
In 1924, Reginald G. Harris was appointed director of the Biological Laboratory with the charge of revitalizing it so that it could compete with its rival, the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole. In 1933, Harris's started the Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology. The Symposia became tremendously successful under the leadership of Milislav Demerec, whose own research in bacterial genetics, and especially his hospitality to Salvador Luria and Max Delbruck, led to Cold Spring Harbor becoming a gathering place for molecular geneticists.
Since 1966, CSHL has hosted professional meetings to allow scientists to present and exchange ideas on the latest results and techniques in their particular field. Each year, 5,500 - 6,000 scientists from over 50 countries attend one or more of the many Cold Spring Harbor meetings held in Grace Auditorium throughout the year. The flagship of this program is the annual Symposium on Quantitative Biology, which changes topic every year.
