Series III: Harvard, 1973 - 2011
Scope and Contents
This series contains several subseries that cover various aspects of Maniatis' time at Harvard University. The subseries were arranged by content in a way that intends to follow logically from one topic to the next. Folders are arranged by date when appropriate in this larger context.
I. Laboratory Files, 1978-2009
This subseries contains documents and correspondence dealing with the logistical and managerial aspects of Maniatis' lab at Harvard. A large focus is safety concerns, such as the correct handling of hazardous material and live animal subjects. It also covers storage and equipment, and financial information, such as salary. Of note are the Post Doc Salaries Binders, which, other than being rehoused into acid free folders, are maintained in the same arrangement they were received in. Finally, requests for plasmids, reagents, and libraries, as well as Maniatis' responses, can be found here. Some folders were received already sorted by what material was being requested, and those have been preserved, but other requests have been arranged in alphabetical order.
II. Laboratory Members, 1973-2009
Papers on those who worked in Maniatis' laboratory can be found here. The subseries is arranged first by the highest academic level the researcher achieved while employed under Maniatis, and then alphabetically. Someone who originally came to work with Maniatis as a graduate student, but stayed with him through their PhD, would be located under the postdoc subheading. The Casual Workers subseries consists of glasswashers and others who were not pursuing formal research. Some lab members have their own dedicated folder, but those that had little information included in the collection were condensed into cumulative files. Finally, the last subseries consists of correspondence between Maniatis and those who did not come to work at his lab, either because he rejected them, they found another opportunity, or a multitude of other possible reasons. Information deemed sensitive has been removed from this series and added to the Confidential series.
III. Administrative, 1981-2011
This subseries focuses on Maniatis' activities in the larger community of Harvard University, rather than within in own lab. Throughout his career, Maniatis occupied many significant administrative positions and was a leader in the development and running of the various biological science departments. The subseries begins with papers relating to various committees and other obligations Maniatis had in the administration of the university, with a special focus on the search for a new Director of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Laboratory. It is then divided into the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, two departments that Maniatis played an instrumental role in.
IV. Grants, 1976-2009
This subseries covers grants that Maniatis held for a long time and those he applied for regularly. While smaller grants, or ones relevant to only one person, can be found in the Lab Financial subseries or in the folders of the lab members who held them, here are those grants that needed long, complex, and often repeat applications. Many, although not all, are NIH grants.
V. Teaching, 1982-2007
Here can be found material relating to classes that Maniatis taught at Harvard, including lecture notes, research, and student grades. Information on which course material was intended for was not always clear.
