Sub-Series II: Chronological Files, Set 2, 1981

 File — Box: 2, Folder: 3
Identifier: Correspondence

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The correspondence series consists of incoming and outgoing mail generated from 1975 to around 2012. Early parts of the collection consist mostly of handwritten or typed letters, with onion paper copies being common. In the later years, Maniatis transitioned to mostly using email and the majority of the correspondence is in that format.

The collection is separated into seven subseries:

I. Chronological Files, Set 1, 1981-1983 II. Chronological Files, Set 2, 1975-2005

These subseries consist of correspondence that Maniatis kept separately stored in chronological order. His original arrangement has been preserved. The first set largely consists of evaluations and letters of recommendation, as well as conversation about staffing lab positions. The second set is more varied and seems to consist of the correspondence that he judged to be important or valuable.

III. Imanishi-Kari Case, 1986-1997

This subseries contains information about the David Baltimore fraud allegations and the ensuing legal proceedings, as well as clippings about how the case was perceived in the public arena.

IV. Institutions, 1977-2000

Here, Maniatis' correspondence is arranged according to the institution he was corresponding with. Some areas have been subdivided according to topic.

V. Individuals, 1976-2008

Maniatis' correspondence arranged by the individual he was corresponding with, sorted by alphabetical order. As well as material originally arranged this way by Maniatis himself, correspondence from throughout the collection that did not fit into another series has been placed here.

VI. Irregulars, 1987-2004

A category created by Maniatis, this subseries consists of those who reached out to Maniatis in an erratic or inappropriate way. It is likely that these letters were kept in case legal proceedings became necessary.

VII. Obituaries, 1995-2012

This subseries consists of retrospectives and obituaries that Maniatis created for friends and colleagues who were deceased, as well as relevant material he has collected to use as reference.

Note that those who worked in Maniatis' lab have their correspondence kept with the rest of their records in the Lab Members subseries.
