Scope and Contents
This series contains files kept by Dr. Brenner relating to his various activities within the scientific community, public sphere and business sector. Represented within this series are his administrative records as Director of the Medical Research Council Laboratory (Molecular Biology and Molecular Genetics) in Cambridge and as President and Director of Science at The Molecular Sciences Institute, La Jolla and Berkeley. During this period (1979-2000) he was involved with many organizations and projects that are represented here as well, such as the Human Genome Mapping Project, the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), Recombinant DNA, and so forth.
Correspondence within these categories, when applicable, has been removed and placed in the Institutional Correspondence subseries (SB/1/2). Appropriate documentation of separated material has been provided within the files. However, if the correspondence is pertinent to the contents of the file, it has not been removed. Cross-reference notations have been provided when necessary.
In addition to the general Subject Files (SB/4/1), the series includes two other subseries which deal with specific subjects: Biotechnology and Medical Company Reviews (SB/4/2) and Genentech v Wellcome Patent Trial (SB/4/3).
