Sub-Series I: Clippings (SB/9/1), 1939-2015
Scope and Contents
The Articles and Clippings series (SB/9) consists of newspaper, magazine, and journal articles related to Brenner. The series is divided into two subseries: Clippings (SB/9/1) and Intact Magazines (SB/9/2).
The Clippings subseries (SB/9/1) ranges from 1939 to 2009 and includes articles collected by Brenner over the course of his scientific career. Included in this subseries are articles written by Brenner, for drafts of these articles please see: Writings - Brenner (SB/2/1). The subseries is arranged alphabetically by folder title, with a scrapbook (house seperately) placed at the end. Topics include biotechnology, sequencing the human genome, and the recombinant DNA controversy of the 1970s. Of note are articles written by Brenner as a student, which can be found in the "South Africa" folder.
The Intact Magazines subseries (SB/9/2) consists of complete magazines, journals, and newsletters that were collected by Brenner from 1959-2009; 2015. The files are arranged chronologically by publication date. Some publications include articles written by Brenner, and these have been noted in the folder titles. Many of the of publications from the 1980s-90s are related to sequencing the human genome. The subseries includes a set of 40 issues of the Journal of Molecular Biology, including the first issue in which Brenner was the assistant editor (Vol. III No. 2, 1961).
